The Book of Eli

Dry....very dry.... vast amounts of dirt...everywhere.....in fact acres of desert land. Where are the people? What happened to the land? Why is soap, water, or anything liquid so valuable? These are my thoughts throughout the first five minutes of The Book of Eli.

As the movie went on, more thoughts started stirring around in my head. What would the world really be like if every bible was burned? Can things really get so bad that people turn their back on God and blame Him for all of their problems? The movie, The Book of Eli takes a stab on an aspect of what the world would be like if there were no more bibles, people did not know how to read, and even worst....they did not know about God.

It is not a movie I would usually pay to go see but the first and only review I heard about this movie was, “It was really good. It is basically a movie about the world without God.” I had to see for myself to elaborate on this explanation.

It was very intriguing to watch a movie that was centered on the possession of the last bible. It was nice to see how truly important it should be considered among other books and other items. It was also very enjoyable to observe the unforeseen twist unfolding towards the end.

In addition, it fascinates me that a man who read the bible every night and knew it word for word would still have to kill as he did. God was supposedly protecting him but Eli should not have had to exhort to such violence. If this was not a film but real life, then God would have protected Eli they way He protected any of His faithful servants, or even the way He protected his own son; because he loves us that much. This movie was made from a Hollywood standpoint and therefore, according to my opinion, did not do the bible, God, or faith/religion the true justice it deserves.

The Book of Eli was sluggish but it had a good message. To be honest it could have been presented in a better way; it seemed to be presented in a moderate tone instead of a passionate tone...if you understand what I mean. To be honest, I do not know if I would recommend it; maybe if you are die-hard Denzel fan. Otherwise I would not recommend you pay evening show money for this movie. Go see a cheap matinee and judge for yourself. I would give this movie, The Book of Eli, three stars.
